Azerbaijan: Lawyers call for the release of Intigam Aliyev

In a letter to Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, 95 lawyers from 24 countries call for the immediate and unconditional release of their colleague, human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev.

Intigam Aliyev was arrested by Azerbaijani authorities in August 2014, and in April 2015, he was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on politically motivated charges. He is a widely respected human rights lawyer who has received numerous awards for his work. He has been at the forefront of the human rights struggle in Azerbaijan for over two decades and has submitted hundreds of cases to the European Court of Human Rights, about a dozen of which are currently pending.

The signatories to joint letter, which has been coordinated by the Human Rights House Foundation, include IPHR Director Brigitte Dufour and IPHR Project Coordinator Simon Papuashvili.
