Kyrgyzstan: Joint NGO statement highlights problems of arbitrary detentions, police brutality, extortion, unfair trials and other unlawful and abusive actions

1 October 2010. The Human Rights Center “Citizens against Corruption” (Kyrgyzstan), the Fiery Hearts Club (France) and the International Partnership for Human Rights (Belgium) have issued a joint statement to the OSCE Review Conference that takes place in Warsaw on 30 September – 8 October 2010.

With this statement, we want to highlight problems of arbitrary detentions, police brutality, extortion, unfair trials and other unlawful and abusive actions perpetrated during the process of investigating and bringing to justice those responsible for crimes committed during the inter-ethnic violence of the summer. These violations have in particular affected ethnic Uzbeks, who appear to have been disproportionately targeted for detention and prosecution for their alleged role in the inter-ethnic clashes.
